We’re not supposed to be able to grow these, but we can. They’ll be ready September - October and our new trees are producing this year, so there will be a few to go around.
The Tamarillo is from the same family as tomatoes, potatoes, capsicum and aubergine. We got these plants from a nursery in Hokitika, so i figured they should do okay down here… and they have. We’ve had a few die off because of frost, and the trees that have done best are up against a north-facing wall. We still have one survivor from the first lot that we planted, seven+ years ago; every year we expect it to curl up and die, and every year it puts out new leaves, flowers and fruit. I’m not going to argue.
